Professional Certification exists to improve the level of professionalism within the field of music teaching, helps readily identify competent music teachers within the community and provides these teachers with prestige, recognition and the potential for student recruitment and increased earning power. Learn more about MTNA's Certification Program here.

The program is based upon a set of five standards defining what a competent music teacher should know and be able to do. Upon fulfillment of these standards, applicants are granted the MTNA Professional Certification credential with the designation, Nationally Certified Teacher of Music (NCTM). All music teachers actively engaged in the profession are eligible for MTNA Professional Certification.

NYSMTA has been a long term partner of the MusicLink Foundation. MusicLink began as a program of the Virginia MTA.

MusicLink links students in financial need with professional music teachers who volunteer to teach on partial or full scholarships for as long as these students continue to be motivated to learn.

Teacher and parent agree on a fee. The fee is no more than half the teacher’s customary fee, and is often considerably less. MusicLink does not provide financial compensation to teachers for their tuition donation, but does reimburse for other student-related expenditures. In addition, it provides assistance in the purchase and repair of instruments, moving costs of donated pianos, free or discounted music from major publishers, and summer music camp scholarships. MusicLink is the recipient of the 2017 MTNA Achievement Award, for making a significant and lasting contribution to music and music making.

OUR WISH FOR 2019: A HEARTENING START TO THE NEW YEAR. We hope that every member of NYSMTA will consider volunteering to teach one MusicLink student. Those of us who work with these students and their families are rewarded by providing the same high quality music training that we offer to families who are financially able to afford full fees.

Please contact Julie Wegener, NYSMTA MusicLink chair, to VOLUNTEER or to ask questions. We can help you locate an eligible student (or you may already be teaching one - and both of you can benefit by registering). If you are faculty at a university or a community music school, we can help you to set up a pedagogy experience in which advanced students teach a MusicLink student with faculty supervision. You can also download a School Packet with information that can be brought to any school to begin the process of nominating students for the program.

The Marvin Kahn Fund has been established principally through member contributions to provide a source of funding for prizes in the annual MTNA-affiliated New York State Music Teachers Association student competitions, available funding being restricted to earned interest. Contributions, which specify the Kahn Fund should be deposited into an account bearing the name of the Marvin Kahn Fund. Unless otherwise indicated by the donor, contributions which do not name a specific fund, but which are given in support of funding for prizes in the annual MTNA-affiliated New York State Music Teachers Association student competitions, are also to be deposited into an account bearing the name of the Marvin Kahn Fund.
